Spanish Language Courses

These courses are available for both the Intensive Language Track and the Spanish Language and Culture Track:

100 LEVEL COURSES - REQUIRED

Grammar and Practical Spanish (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE - Conducted in Spanish

In the grammar portion of the course, students are exposed to the basics of the Spanish language, and students have the opportunity to learn and practice both the theory and the pragmatic basics of speaking and writing. The practical component of the course consists of reading, dictation, composition, phonetics studies, and focuses on pronunciation and intonation.

Written Expression and Understanding (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE -  Conducted in Spanish

Students learn to write about themselves in simple structures in everyday situations.

Oral Expression and Understanding (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE - Conducted in Spanish

This course presents the opportunity to use the Spanish language in situations presented by the teacher, in dramatizations, oral presentations, and through listening comprehension.

200 LEVEL COURSES - REQUIRED

Grammar and Practical Spanish (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE - Conducted in Spanish

Grammar students at the intermediate level focus on theory, sentence structure, more complex writing and reading skills and enhancing vocabulary. The practical component of this class is composed of reading, dictation, composition, phonetics, and intonation exercises to improve students’ abilities to use their knowledge of Spanish in practical situations.

Written Expression and Understanding (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE -Conducted in Spanish

Students read literary texts, newspaper articles, and compositions. This course aids in improving a student’s ability to read and understand various styles of Spanish writing.

Oral Expression and Understanding (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE - Conducted in Spanish

Students are presented with situations in which to respond verbally, present dramatizations, and practice oral expression and comprehension.

300 & 400 LEVEL COURSES - REQUIRED

Grammar and Practical Spanish (40 contact hours) - REQUIRED COURSE - Conducted in Spanish

The advanced level students work to perfect their written knowledge of Spanish, polish skills with complex sentence structures and verb tenses, and enhance their vocabulary. This practical component of the class is composed of reading, dictation, composition, phonetics, and intonation exercises to improve students’ abilities to use their knowledge of Spanish in practical situations.
